Pearl Jewellery
Pearl wedding jewellery is a beautiful classic look for brides. We love pearls at Sarah Kavanagh Bridal. As well as looking fabulous on your big day they are a staple accessory for everyday of the week!
There are many different types of pearls – Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, Freshwater and also crystal pearls. At Sarah Kavanagh Bridal we use freshwater pearls. Although crystal pearls are cheaper we feel that the lustre and beauty of a natural pearl cannot be matched.
Freshwater pearls are formed in large mussles that live in lakes and rivers. The first cultured freshwater pearls originated in Japan, but are now mostly produced in China. Modern farming techniques can now produce increasingly larger, rounder pearls with appealing lustre compared to those available in the past.
When buying pearl jewellery it is important to consider buying a set from the same jeweller as that way they can ensure that as far as possible the pearls match in colour and lustre. As freshwater pearls are natural there will always be some shape and colour variations and so it’s always best to buy any matching jewellery at the same time. As all our wedding jewellery is handmade at our studio in the UK we are able to hand pick the very best pearls for your bridal jewellery set. A pearl jewellery set would commonly be a pearl necklace, a pearl bracelet and pearl earrings.
Care for your wedding pearls is also important to keep them looking good. Always put your pearls on last after any hair or make up and perfume. In particular perfume and hairspray will damage the pearl and cause them to loose their lustre. However lovely your pearls you should always remove them before bathing or swimming as again this will ruin the lustre of the pearl. Do not use silver polish on any clasps or ear fittings near to pearls instead regularly gently rub with a soft cloth.
Over time the silk that the pearls are thread on may pickup dirt and begin to stretch and so to keep your pearls in their best condition it is important to get them restrung every now and then. If you wear your pearls regularly we recommend that they are restrung every year or so. If you wear them infrequently then getting them restrung every three to five years will be adequate to keep them in good condition.
At Sarah Kavanagh Bridal we are able to restring your pearls for a small charge, please contact us for more details.
